Chilies originated in South America but are now used in many of the world's major
cuisines with India as the largest producer and with Mexico as the "mecca"
for chili-lovers. There are more than 200 different types of chilies and there are also
rating systems for the heat in them; however size or colour should not be an indicator.
The Tezpur chili, which has been discovered in India is now registered as the hottest
and is said to have triggered heart attacks.
Chilies are an excellent source of Vitamin C and can clear blocked sinuses. They
stimulate the appetite and improve circulation but can irritate the stomach if eaten
to excess. Chilies also stimulate the brain to produce the feel-good-hormone endorphins.
